Strengthening Your Books Before Q3

As CPA firms move closer to Q3, it’s a good time to take a fresh look at the books they’re managing for clients. By now, months of transactions have already been recorded, and small issues can start adding up. Unreconciled accounts, transactions sitting in suspense, or missing documents may not seem urgent today, but they can create a much bigger cleanup job later.

The bigger challenge for many CPA firms is simply having enough time and people to stay on top of it all. Between tax work, client questions, reviews, and advisory services, bookkeeping can easily get pushed down the list.

That’s why strengthening the books before Q3 isn’t just about cleaning things up. It’s also about making sure your team has the capacity to keep the books accurate and up to date for the rest of the year.

Clean books do more than keep financial statements accurate—they give CPA firms more time to focus on what really matters. When transactions are recorded properly and accounts are reconciled regularly, it becomes much easier to spot unusual activity or potential issues before they turn into bigger problems.

This is especially important as firms head into the second half of the year. Clients may need current financial statements, cash flow updates, management reports, or tax planning advice. When the books are incomplete, valuable time gets spent going back and fixing old accounting issues instead of providing that higher-level support.

A mid-year review gives firms a chance to see where each client’s books stand and address problems while the transactions are still fresh. Rather than uncovering months of unreconciled accounts during year-end work, the team can deal with those issues now and make the rest of the year much easier.

It also makes things better for the client. Business owners want to know what’s happening with their finances while there’s still time to act—not months after a problem occurred. Keeping the books accurate throughout the year allows CPAs to have useful conversations about the business and help clients make better decisions.
